Mechanical Feasibility of Asphalt Materials for Pavement Solar Collectors: Small-Scale Laboratory Characterization

Rutting (i.e., depressions along the wheel path) is a distress exhibited by flexible asphalt pavements at high in-service temperatures negatively affecting ride comfort and safety. In this regard, fine mortar bitumen filler sand) plays key role in rutting potential of mixtures. Given background, manuscript presents small-scale laboratory experimentation aimed assessing rutting-related performance plain combined with natural (limestone) or manufactured (steel slag) aggregates (size up to 0.18 mm) through advanced experimental theoretical approaches. Specific rheological tests dynamic shear were carried out achieve goal. The investigated blends came from wider research project focused on implementation pavement solar collector (a road system harvest energy irradiating pavement). particular, present paper verifying mechanical suitability produced mixes respect permanent deformation resistance. Such investigation mainly showed that previously selected constituent materials did not imply criticisms terms response.
